France (105M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of ferro-alloys production, comprising approx. 63% of total volume. Moreover, ferro-alloys production in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (21M tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Indonesia (7.1M tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume in France amounted to +71.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+0.0% per year) and Indonesia (+42.3% per year).

Ferro-manganese (112M tons) constituted the product with the largest volume of production, comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, ferro-manganese exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, ferro-silico-manganese (17M tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by ferro-chromium (14M tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of ferro-manganese production amounted to +28.1%. With regard to the other produced products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: ferro-silico-manganese (+2.6% per year) and ferro-chromium (+1.9% per year).

In value terms, ferro-manganese ($130.2B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by miscellaneous ferro-alloys ($26.6B). It was followed by ferro-chromium.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2024 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ferro-alloys imports expanded remarkably to $42.7B in 2024. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 129%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $57.2B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.

China dominates imports structure, amounting to 14M tons, which was approx. 52% of total imports in 2024. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (1.4M tons) and Japan (1.2M tons), together comprising a 9.7% share of total imports. The following importers - the United States (1,159K tons), Indonesia (1,023K tons), the Netherlands (908K tons), Hong Kong SAR (863K tons), South Korea (589K tons), Turkey (551K tons) and Italy (514K tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +18.9% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Mozambique (+82.8%), Hong Kong SAR (+70.7%), Indonesia (+32.0%) and Turkey (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +82.8% from 2013-2024. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-1.7%), Japan (-2.9%), Italy (-4.0%) and South Korea (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+38 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.2 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.4 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2013-2024, the share of the Netherlands (-2.9 p.p.), Italy (-3.6 p.p.), South Korea (-4.2 p.p.), the United States (-5.4 p.p.) and Japan (-7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($18.7B) constitutes the largest market for imported ferro-alloys worldwide, comprising 44% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($2.9B), with a 6.9% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 5.4% share.

In China, ferro-alloys imports increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+7.8% per year) and Japan (-1.5% per year).

Miscellaneous ferro-alloys (11M tons) and ferro-chromium (9.3M tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2024. Ferro-silico-manganese (2.9M tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by ferro-manganese (6.3%) and ferro-silicon (5.9%).

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for miscellaneous ferro-alloys (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest types of imported ferro-alloys were miscellaneous ferro-alloys ($20B), ferro-chromium ($11.5B) and ferro-silico-manganese ($3.1B), with a combined 81% share of global imports.

Among the main imported products, miscellaneous ferro-alloys, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, Indonesia (7M tons), distantly followed by South Africa (4.2M tons) and India (2.3M tons) represented the key exporters of ferro-alloys, together creating 64% of total exports. Malaysia (881K tons), Norway (731K tons), Kazakhstan (632K tons), the Netherlands (456K tons), Brazil (407K tons), Egypt (396K tons) and China (377K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
